NEW COMMISSIONS

Incorporating coloured and textured glass into any domestic or commercial project can create an impressive and memorable decorative feature. You may already have thoughts of a design and we will work with you to develop your ideas further. We can offer you design material, glass samples and expert advice on the correct glass and style of window in relation to the period of your building. You are welcome to have as much or as little input in the process as you like. Once a design brief has been established a full-scale drawing is produced for approval, colour and texture choices are finalised and production is ready to commence. We use traditional materials and techniques to produce our windows and we pride ourselves in the quality of our workmanship. We are happy to work in conjunction with your nominated frame manufacturer to ensure that your new windows arrive on time and fit perfectly. A bit about us and some of our past work can be found here.

RESTORATION

Whilst traditional leaded windows should last for decades, they will eventually show signs of age. Apart from glass cracking, usually as a result of impact, the cement deteriorates over time and falls out at which point the window loses rigidity and starts to bow. When bowing occurs the soldered joints tend to crack, and the lead then deteriorates. It is often possible to replace broken or cracked glass pieces in-situ, but if the panel has bowed then the best option is to remove it, lay it flat on a bench and carry out the necessary repairs. Every window we repair in the workshop has its border lead replaced, is cleaned and thoroughly re-cemented as a matter of course, even if damage is restricted to a small area of the window. If we feel that the damage to your panel is too extensive for repair, we will recommend a full restoration. This entails dismantling the window and rebuilding with new lead section. Broken glass is replaced with the closest available match, whenever possible taken from our stock of salvaged period glass. If an exact match is not available, then we ‘balance’ our repairs to ensure that symmetry is retained in the design. Fine cracks in stained or painted glass can often be glued, thus avoiding the need to paint a new piece which can be time consuming. Once restored, your window will be returned to its original splendour and should last for decades to come. You will receive a detailed breakdown of the work required to restore your window in the initial quotation. For further reading on Stained Glass Restoration click here.

Glazing Options

There are numerous options available when refitting your windows such as adding a secondary glaze of glass or a double glazed unit or ‘encapsulating’ your stained glass panel within a double glazed unit.

Encapsulating a lead light window is the process of suspending it between two panes of glass and sealing it to form a double glazed unit. Whether you are considering restoring your existing decorative glass or having a new design produced, an encapsulated lead light is superior in quality and appearance to modern day plastic ‘stick on’ film reproductions. Units are produced in thicknesses of 19mm, 24mm and 28mm. They can be made with toughened and/or thermally efficient glass, increasing security and insulation whilst adding a long lasting decorative feature to your home.

If you are having your existing lead lights restored, we can re-install them with a toughened glass double glazed unit secondary glaze, usually planted on the inside face, improving the insulation and security of your home. Looking for straightforward double glazed units with a difference?

Obscured glass is used in the production of double glazed units where privacy is required, for example front entrances or bathroom windows. Mass produced obscured glass patterns have hardly changed since the 1960’s. The range is very limited and hardly inspiring. Alternatively, you may be replacing original timber windows with new frames fit for double glazing. The familiar ‘wobble’ that your original period plate glass had is lost to the optically clear modern glass replacements. We use various textures and colours of ‘handmade’ glass in the production of leaded windows that can be laminated to safety glass making it fit for purpose for double glazed units. These allow you to benefit from the insulation of a double glazed unit whilst retaining period features of your home. For more information on glazing options click here.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If you have seen our lead light panels in a showroom, the range is not exhaustive. A variety of different colours and textures are available, and designs can be altered to create a unique long-lasting feature for your home.
Leave it to our experienced designer or input some ideas of your own in the form of pictures or sketches, it is up to you. Either way a full-scale draft is produced first to give you the chance of seeing your panel before it goes into production.

In most cases existing decorative windows can be converted to fit your new timber or UPVC installation, giving you the option of retaining important original features of your home.

Once a design has been approved it usually takes 2 – 3 weeks to deliver your windows. If you are having new frames fabricated, we work closely with several local companies and do our best to ensure that your windows are fitted the same day as your new frames.

Consultation is free and without obligation, once a design or schedule of work has been agreed, then a 50% deposit is required, the balance is due on completion of the job.

If you are looking to bid on or buy a reclaimed window but you are not sure of how much it will cost to repair or resize, we are happy to offer advice. Email a picture and dimensions, and we will get back to you with an estimate.

Almost all new front doors and window frames take double glazed units these days, and options for coloured windows often consist of plastic films and stick on lead. We have been encapsulating or triple glazing windows for many years and feel that this offers the best of both worlds. Traditionally made lead panels offering superior texture and colours that won’t fade, with the security and insulation of a double-glazed unit.

Double glazed units are often obscured for privacy, but the standard range of mass produced patterned glasses which has remained the same for decades is very limited. Traditional 3mm ‘art glass’ used in our craft is too thin to use in the production of double glazed units, so we have developed a method of safely incorporating ‘art glass’ by laminating it to the face of a clear unit.
With a vast range of handmade colours and textures to choose from, you can create a unique and stylish front entrance.
